A Look At Nutrition
Proper nutrition during pregnancy and postpartum is essential for health of mom and baby. Lets take a look at one of the essential nutrients needed during pregnancy—Protein. Pregnant women should eat between 80-100grams each day. You are probably thinking that’s a lot! First track everything you eat. Then count the grams of protein in each food to determine how close you are to the amount you need. Protein is the building block for our bodies and remember, everything you eat goes to building baby’s body. Studies by Dr. Brewer have shown that women that consumed 75grams or more of protein each day had a 0% chance of developing Toxemia, a life-threatening disease in the last trimester of pregnancy. Women that consume less than 75grams of protein a day had a 40% chance of developing Toxemia. Dr. Brewers website: www.blueribbonbaby.org.
Nutrition during postpartum has a significant impact on moms recovery and health after delivery. Dr. Elvove has rarely seen postpartum depression and many other symptoms that many women experience in his practice because of the routine services he provides for his patients. I recommend you check out his website at www.elvovemd.com and read the December 2002 Newsletter. It gives specifics on what moms and other family members can do to help with postpartum recovery and health of mom. After experiencing postpartum depression myself I did extensive research and found there are 3 key elements that moms need postpartum. Those are: 1. Healthy, well-balanced diet 2. Rest 3. Essential nutrients to restore depleted nutritional reserves from a whole food supplement. It’s never too late to start getting the resources that you need.
